We are starting two new special interest groups (SIG) that will meet on the same day and time. The groups will meet on the second Saturday of each month from 11 am to 1 pm. The first informal meeting will be in-person on January 8, 2022, at the Iowa Genealogical Society (IGS). Our vision is to use the group to do actual research using the library resources and online beyond Ancestry. These groups are "hands-on," your input directs the discussions. If you have questions or need help, you have immediate access to someone.
Would you please come to our informal meeting to help set up how the two groups will operate? Your input is needed to help shape these two groups. The groups are Genealogy Basics SIG and African American SIG and will meet simultaneously. We expect them both to have a handful of people to start. As one or both groups grow, we will reevaluate to see if they need to be separated. The anticipation is that the African American researchers will be Beginning researchers. All beginning researchers start the same way, no matter of nationality. I will be on hand to help, and I hope the library volunteer for the day will help.
The first half-hour and no more than an hour:
· Discuss a resource at the beginning of the meetings, followed by a question and answer period about the resource. (5-10 minutes)
· Brags and Brickwalls
· Members provide suggestions to help each other.
· Questions since the last meeting or any questions.
Remaining time:
· We research.
· Ask questions as you go.
We encourage you to attend a Beginning Genealogy webinar before the January meeting or soon after. The next Beginning Genealogy webinars are December 2nd and January 13th.
Come to the meeting with questions, or you can email them to me now at Ricki@RootsToBranchesGenealogy.com. I will address the questions at our meeting. Register in advance, but you do not need to attend. We would like to know how much interest there is in the new SIGs.
Questions? Want to be on the email list but can't make it to this meeting?
Please reach out to me at Ricki@RootsToBranchesGenealogy.com with the subject line "BG and AA SIG."
Thank you,
Ricki King, Coordinator
PS: Remember to bring information on someone you want to start researching. If you have a laptop, bring it or a notebook.
One more thing there are two events set up on Facebook as well.
