Raise a glass or two to Prohibition!

Updated: Jun 19, 2020

One hundreds ago today the ratification of the 18th amendment happened 16 January 1919. Thus, making it illegal to drink alcohol on 17 January 1920 a year and a day later. The amendment passed with Iowa casting the 31st yes vote.

Interesting timeline:

· World War I ended 11 November 1918.

· 18th amendment ratifying prohibition 16 January 1919.

· Prohibition takes effect 17 January 1920.

· Great depression starts 1929.

· Prohibition repealed 5 December 1933.

· Great depression ends 1939.

This newspaper didn't get the memo that prohibition was the top story on 16 January 1919.

Enjoy the headlines from 1919 and 1920. Cheers!! Glad it didn’t last.
