I decided to see what The Bystander newspaper was covering from Des Moines, Iowa in 1918. The black owned newspaper was a weekly published on Friday’s. So, I looked at the December 20th paper the closes one before Christmas.
Shocker the front page has no story. Instead, it is all advertisements selling Christmas trees, jewelry, and home delivery of coal “direct from the mine.” I don't see this happening today.
